I t was April Fools Day 1969 when a group of hostelers held a meeting which resulted in the formation of the Sheffield Local group of the Youth Hostel Association. F or many Years the groups clubroom was a scout hut at king Edwards VII school. Eventually the scout hut became dilapidated and the rusty spiral staircase up to it became unsafe. It was time to move. |

T he next port of call was the scout hut at Broomhill. This became the home for the group for nearly 10 years. As the group grew with people coming from all over Sheffield and further afield, a move to a more central position was sought. So we ended up here at The Red Lion in Charles Street. A lthough the venue for the group has changed, the reasons for the groups formation nearly 30 years ago haven't. To meet, walk and enjoy weekends staying in Youth Hostels up and down the country. |
